Excerpt: Most tropical livestock production systems have low productivity due to low feed availability and quality, especially in drought-prone areas where the livestock sector regularly suffers large losses. The problem is not limited to arid and semi-arid regions of Ethiopia. Declining crop yields accompanied by increasing requirements for food are forcing farmers of the central and northern highland regions to cultivate more land at the expense of grazing pasture and browses. These problems are exacerbated by poor management and financial limitations.
