Excerpt: This is the first issue in 1999 of this quarterly report prepared by the FAO Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) on the food supply situation, cereal import and food aid requirements for all countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The report is designed to provide the latest analysis and information on the food situation in these countries to governments, international organizations and other institutions engaged in relief operations. Part I focuses on the food supply difficulties in several countries of the sub-region, particularly in Angola, Somalia, Sierra Leone and Democratic Republic of Congo, where civil strife and unfavourable weather have perpetuated food emergencies for the affected populations. It also highlights successes in the Sahelian countries where above-average to record crops have been gathered.
