Excerpt: Los grandes ríos en gran parte de su recorrido constituyen sistemas de río-llanura de inundaci›n altamente complejos tanto en el tiempo como en el espacio. Esta complejidad, unida a la preferencia humana por establecerse sobre sus mÿrgenes y llanuras, hace que estos sistemas sean muy complicados de ser manejados. Las aguas provenientes de los tramos superiores aportan los nutrientes necesarios para sostener la alta productividad de la llanura de inundaci›n así como sustancias contaminantes, resultado del desarrollo y potencialmente t›xicas para la biota. Las transformaciones en el entorno físico, tales como la construcci›n de represas, canalizaciones o tomas para riego, contribuyen aun mÿs las complicaciones de la ordenaci›n pesquera.
